Japanese Film Festival 2025
Cinema 1, The Red Carpet
Edsa Shangri-la Mall
As the title suggests, "A Samurai in Time" is a time travel film about a real life Edo period samurai Kosaka Shinzaemon who by some freak in nature through a lightning strike is transported 400 years into the future. He conveniently 'lands' on a film set of a Kyoto television series where he is mistaken as an extra. Trouble brews as he yields an actual katana sword and almost ends up killing the main character. Sticking to the code of honor of a samurai, he defends the 'damsel in distress' character of the series.
Kosaka is mostly confined on the set of the film where the kind hearted AD (assistant director) takes him to a hospital because he hurt his head during one of the reel sword fights on the set. Assuming that he got amnesia from the injury, the AD also helps him settle in a nearby temple where the shooting is done.
Kosaka settles down quickly earning his living as an extra on the film set. It is only when he is cast in another Jidaigeki genre film where the twist occurs. This genre refers to Japanese period dramas set primarily in the Edo period, known for its authentic portrayal and historical accuracy in costumes and styling. Normally these films, TV series or theatrical plays feature samurai, sword fighting and tales of honor highlighting the struggle between good and evil. A popular film genre which is slowly losing its appeal to the younger generation.
So back to the twist, I won't reveal any spoilers but suffice to say, it added a much needed boost to the storyline of this film within a film heartwarming light comedy with an equal amount of dramatic sequences (especially the sword fighting scenes) and emotionally reflective moments.
